The Matt Giteau Cup has once again produced a range of fancy footwork, hard running and a sensational showing of teamwork, as primary students from across the Canberra region donned their school colours in a great display of junior rugby.

Brumbies Development Officer and Tournament Director Joshua Riley is confident the tournament provides a great platform for player development and continues to strengthen the junior rugby scene within the ACT.

“This year was another successful installment of the annual Matt Giteau Cup. Over the two gala days, we had 500 participants spread over 35 teams from across the Canberra region.”

“As we continue to see participation flourish in the nation’s capital, we send a big thanks to the Queanbeyan Whites and Uni-North Owls for operating canteens over the two days, the schools who participated and the continuous support of the ACTRRA.”

With a total of 70 games played over the two-legged event, students were able to showcase their skills and prove just how much they love the sport. It was a great opportunity for players to step away from their weekend uniforms and play with some of their closest mates from the classroom.

Down at Southwell Park, the northside gala day was run and won on Tuesday the 16th of May, as Mother Teresa Primary School took out the year 3/4 competition and St Monica’s Primary School proved to be too strong in the year 5/6 competition.

The southside competition was played at Queanbeyan’s Campese Oval on Thursday the 18th of May, with St Edmund’s dominating division one. St Edmund’s won the year 3/4 competition, with Marist battling hard as runners up. The year 5/6 competition was overrun by a sea of blue and white as St Edmund’s went neck and neck in the final to take out first and second place in a dominant display of rugby.

All schools and participants should be very proud of the fantastic level of rugby that was on display over the two days, and we look forward to seeing even more development in next year’s competition.

With the Matt Giteau Cup wrapped up for another year, students are encouraged to continue their fine form as all schools are invited to compete in the Brumbies Primary School 10s Championships on the 2nd of June, here at Brumbies HQ.
